We would like to describe the life journey of Father Andrei, for when a person, who had lived such a long life (Father Andrei would have turned 90 on January 14th) dies, one instinctively thinks, that such a person may have lived an interesting life which is worth learning about.

Мы хотели бы описать жизненный путь отца Андрея, потому что, когда человек, который прожил такую долгую жизнь (отец Андрей повернулся на 90 год 14 января), умирает, инстинктивно думает, что такой человек, возможно, жил интересным жизнь, о которой стоит узнать.

Father Andrei was born in Poltava in 1927.  During World War II, when the German military authorities permitted freedom of worship on the occupied Russian territories, Bishop Benjamin Novitsky (+1976) organized pastoral courses, which the fifteen-year- old Andrei attended. Bishop Benjamin was Father Andrei's first spiritual mentor, who taught him his first pastoral lesson, a lesson that Father Andrei remembered through his entire life, and which we will describe below.

Во время Второй мировой войны, когда немецкие военные власти разрешили свободу вероисповедания на оккупированных русских территориях, епископ Бенджамин Новицкий (+1976) организовал пасторальные курсы, на которых присутствовал пятнадцатилетний Андрей. Епископ Вениамин был первым духовным наставником отца Андрея, который научил его своему первому пастырскому уроку, уроку, который отец Андрей вспомнил на протяжении всей своей жизни, и о котором мы расскажем ниже.

In 1943, Father Andrei ended up in Germany.  After War's end, he studied at the Lomonosov Russian Gymnasium in Münchehof, where he met his second spiritual mentor, Father Mitrophan Znosko-Borovsky (later Bishop Mitrophan of Boston, +2002), who remained Father Andrei's spiritual guide till the end of his life.

В 1943-ем году отец Андрей попадает в Германию. После войны, отец Андрей учился в Ломоносовской гимназии в Менхегофе где познакомился со своим вторым духовным наставником - отцом Митрофаном Зноско-Боровским (впоследствии епископом Митрофаном Бостонским, +2002) , который оставался таковым до конца своей жизни.

In 1950, the 23-year- old Andrei immigrated to United States, where he met his third spiritual mentor - Father Adrian Rimarenko (later Archbishop Andrei of Rockland, +1978).

В 1950-ом году, когда отцу Андрею было 23 года, он эмигрирует в Америку, где знакомится со своим третьим духовным наставником - отцом Адрианом Рымаренко (впоследствии архиепископом Андреем Рокландским, +1978).

In 1955, Father Andrei married Katherine Kizenko. The same year, on the Day of the Holy Spirit (second day of Pentecost), Father Andrei was ordained a reader and a subdeacon by Archbishop Vitaly Maksimenko (+1960).  A half a year later, on the feast of St. Spyridon of Trimythous (December 25th), Archbishop Averky Taushev (+1976) ordained Father Andrei into the deaconate. Father Andrei served as a deacon in the Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY, for ten years. In 1965, on the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 28th), he was ordained into priesthood by Archbishop Averky and assigned as the rector of the Holy Virgin Protection Church in Rochester, NY.  In this capacity Father Andrei served for six years, but unfortunately, due to a conflict in the parish, had to leave this post.  In 1972, he was assigned as the rector of the Joy of All Who Sorrow Church in Cleveland, OH. Three years later, due to family circumstances, Father Andrei moved to Canada, where he was an assistant priest at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Toronto.

В 28 лет, отец Андрей венчается на Екатерине Ивановне Киценко. На Духов день того же 55-го года, архиепископ Виталий Максименко (+1960) рукополагает отца Андрея в сан чтеца, а затем - в иподиакона. Через полгода, в день памяти святителя Спиридона Тримифунтского, 25-го декабря, архиепископ Аверкий Таушев (+1976) рукополагает отца Андрея в сан диакона. Отец Андрей служил 10 лет в сане диакона в Покровском храме в городе Наяк, шт. Нью Йорк. В 1965 году, в праздник Успения Божией Матери, архиепископ Аверкий рукоположил о. Андрея в сан иерея и он был назначен настоятелем Покровского храма в г. Рочестер, шт. Нью Йорк. Прослужил о. Андрей в Рочестере шесть лет. К сожалению, из-за приходского конфликта, о. Андрей был вынужден оставить этот приход. Через год, в 1972 году, о. Андрей назначается настоятелем храма Всех Скорбящих Радосте в городе Кливланд, шт. Охайо. Тут о. Андрей прослужил три года, а затем, по семейным обстоятельствам переселяется в Канаду, в город Торонто, где приписывается к Свято-Троицкому собору.

During all this time, to support his family, Father Andrei also held a secular job.  When, in 1977, he lost his job in Canada, he moved back to the United States.  He was assigned to the Saint Panteleimon Church in Hartford, CT, where his brother-in- law, Father Boris Kizenko, served as rector.  After Father Boris was reassigned to a parish in New Jersey, Father Andrei held the position of interim rector of the Hartford parish for one year.  In 1981, Father Andrei was assigned as the rector of the Presentation of Christ Church in Stratford, CT, a position he held for the past 35 years.

Во всех приходах о. Андрей совмещал пастырскую деятельность с мирской работой. Через два года, когда о. Андрей потерял работу, он возвратился в Америку, в штат Коннектикут, и был приписан к Свято-Пантелеймоновскому храму в г. Хартфорде, где в то время был настоятелем его шурин, о. Борис Киценко. Когда же о. Борис был переведён на приход в Нью-Джерзи, о. Андрей был назначен временно исполняющим должность настоятеля Пантелеймоновского храма. Через год, в 1981 году, о. Андрей был назначен настоятелем Сретенского храма в городе Стратфорд, Коннектикут, и нёс это послушание последние 35 лет.

It is noteworthy, that the parish where Father Andrei served as a deacon was dedicated to the feast of Protection of the Holy Virgin and the first parish where Father Andrei served as a priest was also dedicated to the same feast.  And it so turned out, that the last time that Father Andrei received Holy Communion before his death was also on the feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin (October 14th).

Интересно, что первый приход, где о. Андрей служил диаконом был Покровский, и первый приход, где он служил священником тоже был Покровский. И так получилось, что последний раз о. Андрей причастился святых Христовых таин в праздник Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы.

Father Andrei loved Russia and the Russian Church.  As early as in 1989, on the fourth year of the perestroika, he went on his first pilgrimage to the holy sites of Russia as a guest of the Moscow Patriarchate.  When he retired from secular work, as long as his health permitted him , he went on pilgrimages to Russia almost every year.  In 1991, he even had the honor to accompany the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov when they were carried from Moscow to the Diveevo Monastery.

О. Андрей очень любил Россию и Русскую Церковь. Уже на четвёртый год перестройки, в 1989 году, он совершил первое паломничество по святым местам России как гость Московской Патриархии. Когда же он вышел на пенсию, то совершал паломнические поездки в Россию каждый год, пока были силы ездить. В 1991 году он даже сподобился участвовать в перенесении мощей преподобного Серафима Саровского из Москвы в Дивеево.

Father Andrei was very talented and had an inquisitive mind.  It is difficult to enumerate all the things that his able hands worked on during his life: he cared for the cow herd at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, when he was a seminarian there, planted a vineyard at his house to make church wine and sewed church vestments and cassocks for himself and other priests.

He had a very creative nature  - he loved to build and beautify churches, starting with the installation of the roof on the newly-erected St. Seraphim Church at the Novo-Diveevo Convent in Spring Valley, NY, in the mid-50's and ending with a major reconstruction of the Presentation of Christ Church at the beginning of this century. The icons of Christ Pantocrator and the angels in the dome of the Presentation Church are his work.

Отец Андрей был одарён многими талантами, имел пытливый ум. Трудно перечислить всё, что делали его небоящиеся работы руки. Это и уход за коровами в монастыре, и посадка виноградника у себя дома, чтобы самому попробовать делать церковное вино, и выпечка просфор, и шитьё подрясников и облачений. У него была созидательная натура - он любил строить и украшать храмы, начиная от настила кровли в строящемся Ново-Дивеевском храме в 50-е годы прошлого столетия и кончая почти полной переделкой Сретенского храма уже в начале этого столетия. Икона Спасителя в куполе храме была написана им самим.

When he was younger, he loved to put on plays based on Russian fairy tales for the parish Christmas yolka parties. He directed the plays, painted backdrops, built sets and made costumes. These plays left a memorable impression on all children who participated in them.

О.Андрей в молодости любил устраивать приходские ёлки, неотъемлемой частью которых была постановка русских сказок. Он был и режиссёром, и художником-декоратором, и создателем костюмов. Эти спектакли были незабываемые для всех, кто в них участвовал.

As mentioned above, the first pastoral lesson that Father Andrei learned from Bishop Benjamin and that he never forgot, was the following: the people can forgive their pastor any fault or transgression except for one: falsehood.  For Father Andrei, honesty and an uncompromising  adherence to his principles were the foundation of his Church ministry and he followed this standard throughout his entire life. He was straightforward, had unwavering opinions, could not and did not want to flatter. Sometimes his candor and lack of diplomacy impeded his ability to manage parish affairs and even caused serious conflicts.  This was a feature of his character, his essence, which he retained until his death.

Ещё в Полтаве, первый наставник о. Андрея, владыка Вениамин, преподал юноше пастырский урок, который о. Андрей считал самым главным и никогда не забывал: паства может простить своему пастырю любой изьян или ошибку, кроме одного - лжи. И вот, в основу своего служения о. Андрей поставил честность и бескомпромиссность и всю жизнь следовал этим принципам. Он был прямолинейным, имел непоколебимые взгляды, не умел и не хотел льстить. Иногда его прямота и отсутствие дипломатии мешали ему в ведении приходских дел и даже вызывали серьёзные конфликты. Это была черта его характера, его сущность, которую он сохранил до конца своих дней.

Service to the Church was the sole purpose of his life and he dedicated all his strength to it.  There was never a time that Father Andrei canceled church services due to sickness, fatigue or inclement weather.  And the Lord preserved and strengthened him.  For example, during the bitter parish conflict in Rochester, a small enameled metal icon - triptych, blackened by time, which was standing in Father Andrei's and Matushka's bedroom, renewed itself - regained its original, vibrant colors.

Служение церкви было единственной целью его жизни и этому были посвящены все его силы. Никогда не было случая, чтобы о. Андрей отменил богослужение, ссылаясь на недомогание, усталость или погодные условия. И Господь хранил и укреплял его. Пример этому - во время жёсткого приходского конфликта в г. Рочестер, в киоте, который стоял в спальне о. Андрея и матушки, обновилась небольшая эмалированная икона – складень, почерневшая от времени.

Until his last day he continued to make plans for further improvement of his church and fretted that there were some things which he was not able to complete.  While on his sickbed, he set a goal to regain his strength so that he could get back to church, and exerted a lot of effort to achieve this objective.  Even the health care workers, who attended to him during the past two months, called him a "stubborn Russian," and they meant it as a compliment rather than as condemnation.

До последнего дня он обдумывал планы по благоустройству храма и переживал, что что-то не успел сделать. Поэтому,будучи на одре болезни, поставил себе цель: встать на ноги, чтобы поехать в церковь и делал для этого много усилий. Даже медицинские работники, которые приходили к нему в последние два месяца, называли его «stubborn Russian» (упрямый русский) и это было не порицание, а скорее комплимент.

And so, an uncompromising and honest pastor, who, with dignity, carried the burden of ministry to Christ's Church throughout his entire life, has now departed from us onto life eternal. May his memory be eternal!

И вот ушёл от нас в вечную жизнь, бескомпромиссный и честный пастырь, который достойно пронёс возложенное на него служение Христовой церкви через всю жизнь.Вечная ему память!
